It’s a kana drill! It’s a rhythm game!

This game was, for me, the most effective way to learn to sightread hiragana and katakana. It drills a combination of kana, English text, and spoken audio across a gradually expanding library of characters... But you hardly notice, guiding the pixelated heroine across vibrant apocalyptic landscapes to a buzzy chiptune beat. It’s equal parts kana tutorial and genuinely challenging rhythm game, which means that some levels may require rhythm or memory skills that even a native speaker would find difficult. But the challenge keeps you working at the edge of recall, in a way that flashcards simply can’t match. Fortunately, you don’t need to complete all levels to advance — and if you are able to finish all levels, you will know hiragana and katakana cold.

Great supplement for study

I have been studying Japanese for a little over a month now - this is my third attempt to learn the language and I am determined to succeed this time; therefore, I have started looking for better means of supplementing my book and instructor study time with games and other fun ways to engage with the language outside of study time proper. Hiragana Pixel Party has been a wonderful supplement to my study regiment.

Alone, this will not teach you the letters; however, it will most certainly embed the characters into your brain so that you don’t even have to think about them when reading Japanese. When I read English I don’t think about the characters that make up words, I merely pass over them and collectively understand the word they form. I was not able to do that previously with Japanese; however, after many hours of playing this on my Switch, I now have a similar fluency with Hiragana and almost with Katakana. It’s incredibly motivating.

Don’t rely on this to teach you, but you can rely on this to drill you. Putting it on my iPhone for when I can’t have my Switch near by ;)

Hiragana/Katakana review

I only started playing this game recently and the cute little tunes and memorization strategies used to help implement these Japanese characters to your mind are extremely helpful! I hope when i complete my hiragana lesson I will be able to depict a majority of the characters without fail. I would absolutely recommend this to people out there just starting out to learn the basics of Japanese writing systems. Ganbatte! (good luck)
Edit: I realized after passing certain levels there is a quick unexpected tempo increase and more characters thrown out to memorize. This app alone will not help with memorization with hiragana and katakana characters. Although, i do commend the game developers for issuing something free and usable to all, brush strokes and consistently should be added in this development for the benefit of mnemonics and other resources to help non-native speakers adjust to the differences of a foreign language. Thank you and so sorry for those relying on 100% good feedback. Talk soon.
